Most students think business starts with a cool idea.
An app.
A logo.
A brainstorm.
A whiteboard full of sticky notes.
That is how entrepreneurship is usually shown.
Especially online.
But most real businesses do not begin with inspiration.
They begin with irritation.
Someone keeps forgetting something.
Someone keeps overpaying for something.
Someone keeps carrying something heavy home from the store.
Someone keeps solving the same boring problem every single week.
That repetition matters.
Because repeated annoyance attached to repeated spending is usually where businesses come from.
The best entrepreneurs are not always the most creative people in the room.
Often, they are the people paying the closest attention.
And the best place for a student to start paying attention is not Silicon Valley.
It is home.
Most students have never interviewed the most important purchasing manager in their life.
Their mom.
Or the person in their household who manages the buying.
This person notices when things run low.
Compares prices.
Checks quality.
Decides where to shop.
Decides what is worth buying again.
Keeps track of what the household needs before everyone else realizes it is missing.
That is not just shopping.
That is a system.
Inventory management.
Budget control.
Quality control.
Restocking.
Scheduling.
Decision-making.
Most students just call it groceries.
But when you look closer, the household is full of business lessons.
Someone has to remember there are only two garbage bags left.
Someone has to notice the paper towels are almost gone.
Someone has to decide whether it is worth making another trip to the store.
Someone has to compare the bulk pack against the convenience option.
Someone has to absorb the mental load of keeping the household running.
That work is easy to miss.
Because when the system works, it feels automatic.
But it is not automatic.
It is operational work.
And operational work is where friction hides.
Friction is anything that makes a routine harder than it needs to be.
It usually does not look dramatic.
Usually, it looks like this.
Realizing there is one garbage bag left at 10:30 at night.
Carrying paper towels home in the rain because they were cheaper at the big box store.
Paying double at the convenience store because nobody wants to make another trip.
Standing in an aisle comparing five nearly identical products while mentally calculating price-per-unit.
Buying the wrong compost liners again because the sizing system makes no sense.
Discovering the bulk savings option is too heavy to carry home without a car.
Nobody posts these moments online.
But they happen millions of times every week.
That is what makes them economically important.
The most valuable problems are often the boring ones.
Because boring problems repeat.
And repeated problems create recurring spending.
That is the first lesson.
Do not start with a big idea.
Start with a small irritation that keeps coming back.
That is where the signal is.
Empathy Is the Method
Design thinking starts when you interview the person doing the work
Most students hear the phrase design thinking and imagine something abstract.
A workshop.
Sticky notes.
A whiteboard full of ideas.
But design thinking is much simpler than that.
And much more useful.
Design thinking is the practice of paying close enough attention to another human being that you can understand where their experience breaks down.
Before solutions.
Before branding.
Before products.
First, empathy.
But empathy does not mean feeling sorry for someone.
It does not mean being nice.
It does not mean guessing what someone wants.
Empathy means slowing down long enough to understand another personβs actual experience before trying to improve it.
That is harder than it sounds.
Most students want to jump straight to the answer.
An app.
A product.
A service.
A logo.
A business name.
But design thinking asks you to stop.
First, watch.
Then ask.
Then listen.
Then notice what the person has stopped noticing because the friction has become normal.
In this module, the empathy work begins with Mom.
Not because Mom is a cute example.
And not because household products are exciting.
Because Mom is often running one of the most sophisticated operating systems students encounter every day.
She manages the budget.
She remembers what is running low.
She compares quality.
She thinks about cost.
She carries the mental load.
She absorbs small failures in the household system before anyone else notices them.
That is why interviewing Mom is not a classroom gimmick.
It is applied design thinking.
Students learn that empathy is not a feeling.
It is a method.
A way of discovering where real life becomes harder than it needs to be.
The design thinking framework has five steps.
Empathize.
Define.
Ideate.
Prototype.
Test.
Empathize means understand the routine before trying to improve it.
Define means name the friction clearly.
Ideate means imagine better ways to serve the need.
Prototype means build the smallest version worth testing.
Test means let reality tell you whether the idea works.
Most students want to skip to prototype.
They want to build.
They want to pitch.
They want to make something look impressive.
But if you skip empathy, you usually build something nobody needs.
That is why this module begins with an interview.
Ask Mom what she buys regularly.
Ask what she runs out of.
Ask what she overpays for because it is convenient.
Ask what she hates carrying.
Ask what she wishes someone else would handle.
Ask what she buys automatically without thinking.
Then do something even harder.
Listen.
Do not correct.
Do not pitch.
Do not defend your idea.
Just listen.
Because the goal is not to prove you are creative.
The goal is to understand the routine.
The garbage bags run out.
The grocery list matters.
The budget matters.
The carrying cost matters.
The forgotten item matters.
The frustration matters.
That is where design thinking becomes real.
The framework is not floating above reality.
The framework is reality once you learn how to see it.
And empathy is the first tool that helps you see.
Build the Hypothesis
A business idea is not real until it can be tested
Now comes the shift.
A business idea is not the same thing as a hypothesis.
An idea sounds like this.
We should sell household essentials.
We should make an app.
We should deliver garbage bags.
We should start a subscription.
That might be interesting.
But it is not enough.
A hypothesis is more specific.
A hypothesis says:
We believe a specific person has a specific problem in a specific routine.
We believe a better offer could improve that routine.
And we know what evidence would prove we are right.
That is the difference.
Ideas are easy.
Hypotheses can be tested.
Here is an example.
Alex is a Grade 11 student from Toronto.
Alex did not start with a product idea.
Alex started with a pattern.
Families in Swansea were already buying garbage bags, compost liners, paper towels, and household basics every single month.
The money was already moving.
But the experience still felt inefficient.
People forgot things.
They ran out.
They made emergency trips.
They overpaid for convenience.
They carried bulky products home because delivery felt excessive for small purchases.
So Alex asked a better question.
Could a trusted student-run local service make household restocking feel easier than the existing system?
That is not a pitch.
That is a hypothesis.
Notice what makes it stronger.
It starts with real behavior.
Families already buy these products.
It names the friction.
People forget, run out, overpay, and carry bulky items.
It connects to money.
The spending already exists.
It proposes a better offer.
A local student-run restocking service.
And it can be tested.
Will families actually try it?
Will they reorder?
Will they recommend it?
Will the economics work?
That is how a business idea becomes serious.
The customer does not wake up excited to buy garbage bags.
They wake up wanting the problem gone.
That is the hidden lesson.
Many durable businesses are not built around glamorous products.
They are built around repeated behavior.
Now there are two definitions of success.
Success for Mom.
And success for the business.
Success for Mom might mean she does not run out of what she needs.
She spends less time managing household logistics.
She trusts the quality.
She avoids unnecessary trips.
She feels the experience became easier.
Success for the business might mean customers reorder.
Margins remain healthy.
Word-of-mouth spreads.
The economics sustain themselves.
The system grows without breaking.
These two definitions have to work together.
If the business wins while Mom loses, the system collapses.
If Mom loves the experience but the business loses money, the business disappears.
Real businesses work when both sides succeed at the same time.
That is what students are learning to design.
Not just a product.
A system.
A system where human behavior, value, and economics point in the same direction.
That is the final move.
Students stop asking:
What cool thing should I invent?
And start asking:
Where does reality still feel inefficient?
That is a better question.
Because reality leaves clues everywhere.
In routines.
In repeated behavior.
In invisible work.
In friction.
In incentives.
In systems hiding in plain sight.
Most adults move through the world without learning to see those systems clearly.
Students who learn to see them early gain an advantage.
Not because they become better salespeople.
Because they become better observers.
And observation is where intelligent business begins.
So before you build anything, ask the better question.
Who is the stakeholder?
What do they already do?
Where does the routine break down?
What money is already moving?
What would make the experience better?
And how will we know if we are right?
That is design thinking.
Not as a poster.
Not as a worksheet.
As a way of seeing.
Once you see the system differently, it becomes very difficult to stop seeing it.
