Is Build Week Right for Your Child?

Build Week is designed for students ages 10–13, but age alone does not determine fit. The more useful question is whether your child can use a laptop independently, follow a multi-step process, contribute to a small team and continue working when a project does not have one predetermined answer.

A child can be bright, creative and curious without enjoying this format. Another child can arrive with no business, design or coding experience and fit naturally because they like making decisions, solving problems and improving something after receiving feedback.

Start With What the Week Actually Requires

Build Week is a five-day product-building experience.

Students do not rotate through unrelated activities. They work on one developing project throughout the week.

In small teams, they:

  • identify a problem;
  • investigate what people currently do or buy;
  • choose a product or service idea;
  • build a website or prototype;
  • calculate costs and pricing;
  • create materials that explain the idea;
  • test it with other people;
  • and decide what should change.

The operating sequence is:

Design it. Build it. Price it. Test it.

The week includes instruction, demonstrations, team discussions and breaks. Most of the day, however, requires students to apply what they have learned to their own project.

That means students need enough independence to act between instructions.

They do not need previous experience with entrepreneurship, design thinking, financial literacy or AI. They do not need to know how to write a business plan or build a website before arriving.

They should already be able to handle the basic mechanics of working on a laptop.

In practical terms, that means being able to:

  • sign in to the laptop without assistance;
  • connect to Wi-Fi;
  • open and use a web browser;
  • follow a link;
  • switch between browser tabs;
  • type a short paragraph;
  • enter information into an online document;
  • find a downloaded file;
  • plug in and manage the laptop’s charger;
  • and ask for help when something is not working.

Students do not need advanced spreadsheet skills. Spreadsheet basics are taught as part of the program.

They should be comfortable with basic arithmetic and willing to use a calculator or spreadsheet to work through costs, prices and quantities.

The distinction is between learning a new tool and needing continuous assistance with the device itself.

Instructors can explain how to use a spreadsheet formula.

They cannot spend the week operating each student’s laptop for them.

A Practical Readiness Check

Parents do not need to predict whether their child will become an entrepreneur.

They need to consider how the child responds to the kind of work Build Week requires.

Use the following questions as an observable fit check.

Can your child work through several steps without an adult sitting beside them?

Build Week provides instructions, examples and direct instructor feedback. Students are not abandoned with a project.

They will still need to read a task, begin working and make some progress before an instructor returns to review it.

A student who regularly needs an adult to initiate every step may find the pace frustrating.

Can your child use a laptop as a working tool?

The laptop is used for research, writing, calculations, website building, visual work and presentations.

Students do not need to be technically advanced. They do need to be comfortable spending substantial parts of the day working on a screen.

A child who strongly dislikes laptop-based work is unlikely to enjoy the format.

Can your child stay with one project as it changes?

The first idea may not survive the week.

Research may reveal that the problem is not important. The product may cost too much. The team may discover that customers prefer another approach. The website may confuse people.

Students need to be able to revise the idea without treating every change as failure.

Can your child receive questions about their work?

Instructor feedback often sounds like:

Who is this for?

What evidence do you have?

Why would someone buy it?

Where did that number come from?

What happens if the customer says no?

Those questions are not signals that the student has done something wrong. They are how the project becomes stronger.

Students do not have to agree with every suggestion. They should be able to consider the feedback, defend a decision with evidence or revise the work.

Can your child contribute to a small team?

Teamwork does not mean that every decision must be unanimous.

It means listening, explaining a position, completing an assigned responsibility and allowing other students to influence the result.

A student who wants complete control over every decision may find team-based work difficult. A student who waits for others to do everything may finish the week without having built much themselves.

Can your child continue when the answer is not obvious?

Some students enjoy assignments with a correct answer and a clear finish line.

Build Week contains both, but much of the project is open-ended.

There may be several reasonable products, prices, audiences or design directions. Students must compare the options and make a judgment.

They should be capable of saying, “I do not know yet, but I can find out.”

Does your child want to do this?

Parent enthusiasm is not a substitute for student interest.

A child does not need to arrive with a business idea. They should show some interest in making, designing, investigating or improving something.

Before registering, describe the week plainly:

“You will work with a small team to find a problem, build a product or service, create its website, figure out what it costs and test whether the idea works.”

Their reaction provides useful evidence.

When Another Summer Experience May Be a Better Fit

Build Week is not intended to be the universal answer for every student ages 10–13.

It is probably not the right fit for a child primarily looking for:

  • sports, movement or outdoor recreation;
  • arts and crafts without substantial laptop work;
  • intensive coding, robotics or engineering instruction;
  • a competitive academic environment;
  • a high-school peer group;
  • a schedule of different activities every day;
  • projects in which every step and answer are predetermined;
  • or an experience requiring very little independent work.

A student may also need support beyond what a small project-based program can provide.

A diagnosis does not determine fit. Students with ADHD, autism, dyslexia or other learning differences may thrive in open-ended project work, just as students without a diagnosis may struggle with it.

The relevant questions are practical:

  • What support does the student use during a normal school day?
  • Can they participate safely in a small team?
  • Can they communicate when they need help or a break?
  • Can the program provide the required accommodation?
  • Would the student require continuous one-to-one assistance?

Families should discuss significant support needs before registering. The purpose is not to exclude students based on a label. It is to determine honestly whether the program can provide the environment that particular student needs.

One uncertain answer on the readiness check does not automatically mean the child should not attend.

A 10-year-old may need occasional help organizing their work but remain deeply engaged in the project. A 13-year-old may be highly independent on a laptop but dislike sharing decisions with a team.

Readiness is a pattern, not a score.

The strongest indicators of fit are:

  • genuine interest in making or improving something;
  • independent use of a laptop;
  • ability to follow multi-step instructions;
  • willingness to contribute to a team;
  • and enough flexibility to revise an idea when the evidence changes.

The strongest indicators of a mismatch are:

  • the parent is interested but the child is not;
  • the student strongly resists laptop-based work;
  • the child expects a recreational camp;
  • the student requires every task to have one correct answer;
  • or the level of individual support required exceeds what the program can provide.

Build Week gives students a structure, a $50 build budget, practical tools and direct instructor feedback.

The decisions inside that structure belong to them.

The goal is not to make every student love entrepreneurship.

It is to give students who enjoy building, questioning and deciding a week in which those instincts have somewhere real to go.
