Entrepreneurship Camps in Toronto: A Parent’s Guide for Ages 10–13
A strong entrepreneurship camp should involve more than inventing a company name, decorating a slide deck and preparing a pitch.
Students should investigate a real problem, gather evidence, build an offer, work through the numbers and discover what changes when the idea meets reality.
What Students Should Actually Build
Entrepreneurship is often presented as a performance.
Come up with a big idea.
Give it a clever name.
Design a logo.
Stand at the front of the room and persuade everyone it will succeed.
That can teach presentation skills. It does not necessarily teach entrepreneurship.
The more useful lesson begins earlier.
Students need to learn that an idea is not automatically an opportunity. A problem is not automatically a market. A product is not automatically valuable because the person who created it likes it.
A strong entrepreneurship camp should move through a practical sequence:
- Notice a problem or repeated frustration.
- Identify who experiences it.
- Look for evidence that people already spend money or effort trying to solve it.
- Study the products, services or workarounds that already exist.
- Decide what could be improved.
- Build a product, service, website or prototype.
- Calculate what it would cost.
- Choose a price or operating model.
- Explain the idea clearly.
- Test it with people outside the team.
- Review what worked, what failed and what should change.
The final output does not need to become a real company.
It may be a physical product, a local service, a website, a prototype or a better version of something people already use.
The point is not to manufacture young founders.
It is to teach students how to move from enthusiasm to evidence.
How Parents Should Evaluate an Entrepreneurship Camp
Entrepreneurship camps generally lean toward one of three formats.
Some are classroom-based. Students learn vocabulary such as revenue, profit, customers, marketing and competition.
Some are pitch-based. Teams invent startup concepts and prepare presentations for judges or classmates.
Others are build-and-test experiences. Students investigate problems, create something, work through the economics and see how real people respond.
Each format can teach something useful. Parents should understand which one they are buying.
Ask the provider:
- What will students spend most of the day doing?
- Will they build something tangible?
- Do students begin with an idea or with evidence?
- How will they investigate whether a problem is real?
- Will they work with actual costs and prices?
- How large are the teams?
- Does each student have a clear responsibility?
- Who will test the final idea?
- How much direct feedback will instructors provide?
- What happens when the first idea does not work?
- Is the final presentation the objective, or one part of the test?
The answers should describe the work, not just the promised benefits.
“Students develop confidence, creativity and leadership” could describe almost any camp.
“Students identify a household problem, examine what people already buy, design an alternative, build its website and calculate its costs” describes an entrepreneurship process.
Age fit also matters.
Students ages 10–13 are ready to make meaningful choices, but many still need a clear sequence, visible milestones and active instructor support. Giving students complete freedom can sound empowering while leaving them unsure what to do next.
The strongest structure creates boundaries without supplying every answer.
Students should know the next decision they need to make. They should not be handed the decision itself.
Financial literacy should also be attached to the project. Costs, pricing and margins are easier to understand when they determine whether the student’s own idea can work.

Where The Money Club Fits
The Money Club.Org publishes this guide and operates Build Week, a five-day entrepreneurship and product-building experience for ages 10–13.
We do not describe Build Week as a startup competition.
Students are not asked to begin with a blank page and invent the next billion-dollar company.
They begin by looking at the world around them.
Each student receives a $50 build budget. Small teams use that budget to:
- identify a real problem;
- research existing behaviour and demand;
- study what people already buy;
- design a product or service;
- build a website or prototype;
- calculate costs and pricing;
- create supporting materials;
- and test whether the idea makes sense to real people.
The operating sequence is:
Design it. Build it. Price it. Test it.
The business curriculum exists to make the building more intelligent.
Design thinking helps students notice friction. Market research helps them distinguish evidence from opinion. Financial literacy helps them understand whether the economics work. AI helps them research, organize, calculate and build—but does not make the decisions for them.

Presenting and selling may happen during the final test, but they are not the main attraction.
The goal is not for every student to leave calling themselves an entrepreneur.
The goal is for students to understand that building something useful requires observation, evidence, judgment, numbers and revision.
Build Week is best suited to students who can use a laptop independently, follow multi-step instructions, contribute to a small team and continue working when an idea needs to change.
It is less suitable for students looking primarily for recreation, advanced coding, a lecture-based business course or a pitch competition.
